The Seattle City Council approved Ordinance 127258, which enacts the ninth six-month extension of interim floodplain development regulations. These regulations were initially established by Ordinance 126113 and amended by Ordinance 126536. The primary purpose of this extension is to allow individuals to continue to rely on updated National Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) when obtaining flood insurance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Flood Insurance Program. The extension is necessary because the City has encountered delays in adopting permanent floodplain development regulations due to appeals and ongoing discussions with various stakeholders, including the Port of Seattle. The interim regulations ensure the City remains in compliance with FEMA requirements. Approximately 2,190 properties citywide are located within identified floodplains and are affected by these regulations, which require new building first floors to be above anticipated flood levels and structures to withstand storm winds and excessive flooding.
