The City of Phoenix approved Intergovernmental Agreements (IGAs) with the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) for the Connected Vehicle Acceleration Zone Project. This initiative aims to deploy interoperable Connected Vehicle (CV) and Vehicle to Everything (V2X) technologies across Phoenix, Tolleson, Avondale, and unincorporated Maricopa County. The project is largely funded by a $19.7 million federal grant awarded to MCDOT, with a total estimated cost of $27.45 million. The City of Phoenix's Street Transportation Department will install up to 650 roadside and virtual units at signalized intersections, while the Fire Department will install up to 230 on-board units in emergency vehicles. The technologies deployed will enable applications such as Emergency Vehicle Preemption, Vulnerable User Road Detection, Transit Signal Priority, and Freight Signal Priority to enhance transportation efficiency and safety. The City of Phoenix's local match contribution is $1,987,000, sourced from the Street Transportation Department's Capital Improvement Program. The IGAs are set to commence around July 1, 2025, and will extend for five years during the post-deployment phase.
