The City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Maricopa County Community Colleges District (MCCCD) to support the expansion of the Phoenix Forge facility. Located at 535 W. Van Buren Street, Phoenix Forge is an entrepreneur and innovation center that provides a learning environment for students, entrepreneurs, hobbyists, and small businesses to access tools and equipment for idea fabrication and product development. The facility, which opened in 2021 as a 17,000-square-foot space, serves all ten MCCCD colleges, members of the public, and Arizona State University, and has grown to almost 2,000 members. The expansion will add 4,000 square feet, including a dedicated glassblowing facility, advanced manufacturing equipment (CNC machining), sanding rooms, finishing booths, and rental work bays. The City will contribute $250,000 towards the physical and programmatic startup costs, including construction, furniture, fixtures, and equipment. The total renovation cost is estimated at over $3 million. Additionally, the City will extend an existing parking agreement for five years, providing 100 parking spaces at the Adams Street Garage with an annual maintenance fee of $2,000 paid by the Community and Economic Development Department on behalf of MCCCD. An economic impact analysis projects that the Phoenix Forge will generate approximately $36 million in economic output over ten years, with the expansion alone generating about $400,000 in tax revenue for Phoenix and other tax jurisdictions.
