The Phoenix City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the Arizona Game and Fish Commission to continue the Community Fishing Program, which has been operational since 1986. This program provides fishing opportunities at seven parks across Phoenix: Cesar Chavez Park/Alvord Lake, Cortez Park, Desert West Park, Encanto Park, Papago Park, Roadrunner Park, and Steele Indian School Park. As part of the agreement, the Arizona Game and Fish Department will stock these lakes with fish species and market the program through publications, websites, and media coverage. The contract term is for five years, from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2029, with a total value of $425,000, funded through the Parks and Recreation Department's budget.
This program enhances recreational opportunities in urban areas, fostering community engagement and promoting outdoor activities for Phoenix residents. It supports the continued use and enjoyment of city parks while encouraging sustainable practices in urban fisheries management.
