The Los Angeles City Council has approved the designation of the Terminal Island “Furusato” Tuna Street Buildings, located at 700-702 Tuna Street and 712-716 Tuna Street, as Historic-Cultural Monuments. The buildings are recognized for their significant contributions to the cultural, economic, and social history of the Japanese and Japanese American fishing village that existed on Terminal Island from the 1910s until 1942. These structures were part of the Fish Harbor community, housing businesses like the Nanka Dry Goods Store and A. Nakamura Company Grocery Store, and are among the earliest commercial buildings in the Furusato, constructed in 1918 and 1921. The designation ensures the preservation of these last remaining structures associated with this historic community.
