Denver City Council approved a grant agreement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide $750,000 in FY23 Community Project Funding for the 16th Street Mall revitalization. The grant funds will support reconstruction of the pedestrian and transitway infrastructure along the Mall from Market Street to Broadway. The project addresses aging infrastructure originally constructed in 1982 and includes widening sidewalks, creating new amenity zones, installing a reconfigured center-running Free MallRide shuttle service, upgrading stormwater and drainage systems, and enhancing surface durability. Intersection reconstructions at Larimer, Lawrence, Arapahoe, and Champa Streets are complete, with work underway at Stout and Tremont. The grant is identified as Grant Number B-23-CP-CO-0289, filed under City Clerk Filing No. 202370702, and expenditures are authorized through August 31, 2031. The Department of Transportation & Infrastructure will manage disbursement of funds into Special Revenue Fund No. 38000.
